Real Madrid vs Inter Milan : two strong records heading into the Santiago Bernabeu 
The 2026-27 Champions League league phase kicks off on Tuesday, September 8, and the Santiago Bernabeu gets the biggest game of the night. Kick-off is set for 21:00, Spanish and French time.
The format remains the same eight-match league phase, running through to January 27, 2027. A slip on opening night won’t end anybody’s campaign, but it does carry real weight in the final standings.
Real Madrid and Inter Milan head into this one with strong domestic records. Nine points from four Liga games for the Madrid side, nine from three Serie A fixtures for the Nerazzurri.
Jose Mourinho faces the club he led to the treble in 2010, 16 years on. In the opposite dugout will be Cristian Chivu, a defender from that side who has gone on to win the Italian title as a coach.
The attacking numbers point clearly in one direction early in the season. Madrid have scored 10 goals in four Liga matches, Inter eight in three Serie A games.
The schedule gives the Italian side an extra problem to deal with. Inter beat Napoli 3-2 on Saturday, September 5 before crossing Europe, while Real Madrid were already back in action away to Betis on Friday, September 4.

The trend is clear in the results. A 2-1 win at Espanyol to open the Mourinho era, then two statement performances at home against Real Sociedad (4-1) and Malaga (4-0). Matchday four brought the first defeat, a 1-0 loss away to Real Betis.
The Bernabeu record is the main talking point so far. Two home games, eight goals scored, one conceded: at home, Madrid have not blinked.
Against Malaga, Jude Bellingham opened the scoring and then forced an own goal from Alfonso Herrero. Kylian Mbappe followed with his 60th Liga goal, before Arda Guler wrapped it up late on.
The injury list is still busy. Raul Asencio, Ferland Mendy, Thiago Pitarch and Rodrygo were missing before matchday four, with Eder Militao still working his way back from a major hamstring injury.
Aurelien Tchouameni and Endrick are the closest to returning, though neither is guaranteed for Tuesday. Up front, though, they are close to full strength with Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham all available.
The expected XI in Seville had Fede Valverde and Bernardo Silva in midfield, with Guler, Bellingham and Vinicius behind Mbappe. That looks the likeliest framework for this European night.
At the back, the trio of Dumfries, Konate and Huijsen was tipped to form the defensive line in Seville, with Cucurella on the left. Thibaut Courtois remains the undisputed first-choice keeper.

Inter Milan : three Serie A wins, eight goals scored 
Italian champions last season, Inter have picked up where they left off. Three Serie A games, three wins, eight goals scored and three conceded.
The first win was emphatic, a 4-1 demolition of Monza at Giuseppe Meazza. The second was far tighter, a 1-0 victory at Cagliari sealed by a long-range strike from Hakan Calhanoglu. Matchday three ended with a 3-2 win over Napoli at Giuseppe Meazza on Saturday, September 5.
Winning without always looking fluent has been this team’s calling card under Cristian Chivu. The Nerazzurri finished last season 11 points clear of nearest challengers Napoli.
The domestic double they clinched in 2025-26 was the club’s first since 2010. The link with Mourinho’s side is obvious, and nobody in Milan has been shy about noticing it.
The left flank remains their sharpest weapon. Federico Dimarco collected his award as Serie A Player of the Season 2025-26 on Wednesday, September 2.
The 2026 summer window had a strong English flavour with the arrivals of John Stones, Curtis Jones and Djed Spence. Stones and Jones got minutes at Cagliari, while Spence is still waiting for his first and was uncertain ahead of the Napoli game.
Chivu inherited a side that had handed the Scudetto to Napoli in 2024-25 before taking it straight back. The top of Serie A has been a revolving door between the two clubs for two seasons now.
Inter’s last European run ended in a defeat to Bodo/Glimt. A trip to the Bernabeu is an immediate test of whether they can put that right.

Madrid’s attacking depth does the rest. Mbappe, Bellingham and Vinicius are all available, while Chivu has to manage a group that burned plenty of energy against Napoli.
