Porto vs Manchester City: a rock-solid defence against England’s most possession-heavy side 
Porto host Manchester City on Tuesday, September 8, for matchday one of the league phase. Kick-off is at 20:00 in Porto, 21:00 in France.
Both clubs come in unbeaten in their domestic leagues, but with very different statistical profiles. Porto have completed five rounds of Liga Portugal without a defeat, while City have scored seven times across three Premier League matches.
The reigning Portuguese champions have made a perfect start: five games, five wins, top of the table. They’ve conceded just one goal across those five matches, in the 2-1 win over Moreirense.
Manchester City are in their first post-Pep Guardiola season, with Enzo Maresca in charge. Three games, three wins: 2-1 against Bournemouth at the Etihad, 4-1 at Crystal Palace, then 1-0 against Coventry.
The tactical contrast jumps off the page. City top the Premier League for completed passes with 1,315, while 94.6% of their passes are short, the highest rate in the division.
Francesco Farioli has built his project on security, with 21 clean sheets during the title-winning 2025-26 season. That was the best defensive record in the Portuguese league.
Manchester City are playing their first European campaign of the post-Guardiola era. The squad was heavily reshaped in the final hours of the late-August 2026 transfer window.
So the match comes down to one simple question: can City break down a side that has let in only one goal in five games? Porto, for their part, will have to find a way to threaten a team that loves to keep the ball.

Five Liga Portugal games, five wins: Porto’s record leaves no room for debate. Alverca, Rio Ave and Arouca were all beaten 2-0 before the trip to Academico de Viseu.
That win in Viseu, a 3-0 away success, was wrapped up before half-time. Andre Silva, Gabri Veiga and William Gomes all scored before the break.
On Friday, September 4, Porto finished matchday five with a 2-1 win over Moreirense. It was the first league goal the Dragons had conceded, even if they still took all three points.
The defensive unbeaten run stretched even further back. They had gone six straight competitive games without conceding, including the Super Cup win over Torreense on August 1, 2026, before that first goal against Moreirense.
Gabri Veiga has been the driving force in Porto’s midfield at the start of the season. He has been directly involved in five goals in four league games, including a goal and an assist in Viseu.
The back line is not at full strength, though. Zaidu Sanusi went off with a muscular injury against Viseu, with Martim Fernandes the leading candidate to fill the left side.
Porto waited until matchday four to concede their first league goal last season. In other words, they are operating at their usual defensive standard.
Vasco Sousa, Andre Miranda, Oskar Pietuszewski and Samu Aghehowa were still working their way back, while Seko Fofana is returning gradually. Farioli’s rotation options are therefore limited heading into this European night.

Three Premier League games, three wins, nine points: City have opened the Maresca era without a hitch. The 4-1 win at Selhurst Park was the first real statement of this new cycle.
Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland both scored twice that day. The first win, 2-1 against Bournemouth, came late at the Etihad, before a tidy 1-0 against Coventry to close out matchday three.
The Italian coach’s hand is already clear in the numbers. City lead the league for completed passes (1,315), passing accuracy (90.9%) and accuracy under high pressure (85.8%).
That short, controlled style will meet a side that sits deep and closes space quickly. Porto have conceded only once in five matches and know how to shut down central areas.
Cherki is the man connecting build-up and end product. He has 15 goal involvements, with five goals and 10 assists, in 20 Premier League starts for City.
The late-August 2026 window turned City’s midfield upside down. Enzo Fernandez arrived for 125 million pounds on deadline day, alongside Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye.
Ndiaye, also signed in the final hours of the window, can play on either flank. Even so, Maresca still had Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden as wide options.
As for absentees, Jeremy Doku is still out with a calf problem, and Matheus Nunes was a doubt because of muscle discomfort. Abdukodir Khusanov had been covering at right-back before the Coventry game.
