Four more seasons for the commissioner
NFL teams were notified this weekend that Roger Goodell has finalized a new four-season extension running through the 2030 season, with the deal expiring March 31, 2031, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
By the end of the contract, Goodell will be nearly 72 years old and will have served 24 years as NFL commissioner, a run of longevity no other major North American sports commissioner currently approaches.

A deadline that lines up on purpose
The March 31, 2031 expiration date matches the league’s current collective bargaining agreement with the players, which also runs out in March 2031. With both timelines aligned, Goodell will oversee the entirety of the next round of labor negotiations, a process he already knows from steering the last one.
Named commissioner in 2006, Goodell has navigated several major league crises while overseeing continuous revenue growth that keeps the NFL the most profitable professional league in the United States.
