NCAA: Boley throws six as Arizona State win 70-7

An onside kick in the first quarter, already in front

Arizona State did not wait around. Morgan State went three and out, Kyson Brown ran 46 yards on the second play of the reply, and then Carson Smith recovered an onside kick with the Sun Devils already ahead.

Five plays after that, Cutter Boley found Omarion Miller from 10 yards. Marquis Gillis added a 25-yard run. It was 21-0 with 6:15 still showing in the first quarter of a game Arizona State went on to win 70-7 in Tempe.

Late on, the two teams agreed to shorten the fourth quarter to ten minutes.

387 yards, and he was finished by the third quarter

Boley threw for 387 yards and six touchdowns on 21 of 27 passing. He came off after the opening drive of the second half, which is the part that makes the number worth repeating. No Arizona State quarterback has thrown for more yards in a Sun Devils debut.

The junior arrived from Kentucky to replace Sam Leavitt, who left Tempe after two seasons and signed with LSU. Leavitt spent the same night in Baton Rouge helping bury Clemson 51-10. Two quarterbacks, one job swapped between them, both of them untouchable within a few hours of each other.

Reed Harris caught six passes for 137 yards and two scores. Grayson Rigdon, a running back, turned two catches into 110 yards and two more touchdowns. Miller led everyone with eight receptions for 102 yards. Harris and Miller did all of that before halftime.

Morgan State never got hold of the ball

The Bears came in at 1-0 after beating North Carolina A&T 17-7 last weekend. In Tempe they found almost nothing. Cameron Edge completed 6 of 15 for 54 yards. Marquez Spells led their rushing with 39 yards, every one of them on a single carry.

Their one good passage came at the end of the first quarter: four plays, 75 yards, a two-yard Jordan Barnett run with 4:20 left. Boley answered with a 28-yard throw to Harris inside two minutes and Arizona State led 28-7 after fifteen minutes. Morgan State fall to 1-1.
