Ajax – Benfica: two teams scrambling for air in the Champions League 
The ArenA will host a strange one on Tuesday : Ajax and Benfica, the only two sides still pointless in this phase of the Champions League, meet to try and salvage some pride.
The Dutch took a 3-0 home spanking from Galatasaray, while the Portuguese went down by the smallest margin to Bayer Leverkusen.
Ajax : a worrying spiral that just won’t stop 
Nothing’s working in Amsterdam. In their last European game, Ajax were punished by a Victor Osimhen hat-trick in under twenty minutes, a script that once again laid bare the club’s weaknesses.
Between heavy losses to Marseille (4-0), Chelsea (5-1) and an opening defeat to Inter, this campaign has turned into a total debacle.
With fourteen conceded and only one scored, Ajax have the worst defensive and offensive records in the competition. They’re rock-bottom. The bad run doesn’t stop there: the club have lost seven European games in a row, unheard of in their history.
Still led by an interim coach since Johnny Heitinga left, the Lancers are piling up setbacks. Grim, in temporary charge, has had a rough start with three straight defeats, including another loss this weekend to Excelsior (1-2).
Simple fact: Ajax have lost three of their last four home matches and won only one of their last nine games in all competitions. Catastrophic form as they welcome Benfica.
Benfica : solid in the league but unrecognisable in the UCL 
Benfica live a very different reality in Portugal. Mourinho’s men grind results without flair but with discipline: through in the Portuguese Cup, in the semi-finals of the League Cup and still within touching distance of the leaders in the league.
Their last game ended with a routine cup win, although Mourinho had to make four changes at half-time to turn it around. In the league, a 2-2 draw with Casa Pia leaves them six points off the top, but they’re still in the hunt.
In the Champions League it’s another story. Benfica have lost their last six matches in the competition and still haven’t scored a single goal under Mourinho in this tournament. A shocking return for a club used to better.
There is, however, a small sliver of hope : the Eagles have won in Amsterdam before : on their last visit. A rare bright spot in an otherwise even head-to-head history.
