A hire people are going to talk about
The University of Alabama has named Alex Accetta director of men’s basketball program relations. Accetta married Nate Oats, the team’s head coach, last July. The school put it in a release Thursday.
The reporting line does not run through her husband. Accetta answers to Shane Lyons, associate athletic director and the administrator over the men’s basketball program.

She has done this job here before
The resume is not thin. Accetta is 31, graduated from Alabama in 2017, and worked in Tuscaloosa from April 2015 to October 2022, leaving as men’s basketball director of operations.
Then came four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, 2022-23 through 2025-26, in client experience and business operations. VIP hospitality, looking after league executives, visiting owners and business partners on game nights. That was the brief.
Shane Lyons put his name to the decision. “Alex brings extensive experience and a proven track record in this area, both at the collegiate and professional level. Having been here before, she knows our program inside out and understands what it takes to operate at the highest level of competition,” he said in the release.
Oats: seven seasons, 243 wins, one Final Four
Nate Oats, 51, arrived before the 2019-20 season. He is 243-170 with the Crimson Tide across six NCAA Tournament appearances. The peak was the 2024 Final Four, which ended 86-72 against UConn.
College basketball barely resembles its old self. Name, image and likeness money and increasingly corporate front offices have pushed major programs to staff up in ways that would have seemed absurd five years ago. Alabama is doing what everyone else is doing. This particular hire will still get discussed well outside Tuscaloosa.
