Home edge: If Aberdeen want any breathing room back, beating the country’s worst defence in front of their own fans is a must, or the pressure ramps up fast.
The table has Aberdeen in 10th with three points, two goals scored and seven conceded. Kilmarnock sit bottom with zero points and the worst defence in the competition.
The contrast with Aberdeen’s start to the season is stark. Stephen Robinson had strung together five straight wins in all competitions before the wheels came off.
Back-to-back defeats against Glasgow’s two big clubs, 1-0 against Rangers and 3-0 against Celtic, sped up the slide. They had already lost 2-0 at Dundee.
Kilmarnock have not had any such peak to fall from. Four matches, four defeats, including a 1-0 loss to St Mirren last weekend. Neil McCann’s side have only really found any comfort in cup football.
The history at the ground adds another layer. Killie have lost their last five visits to Pittodrie, a run that makes Saturday’s trip a serious ask.
Aberdeen: five wins, then three league defeats 
Aberdeen opened the 2026-27 campaign with five straight wins, including four in the Scottish League Cup group stage.
The fifth was the standout: a 2-1 win over Hearts on the opening day of the Premiership, with both goals coming after the 90th minute. The run ended almost as soon as it had begun.
The 2-0 loss at Dundee kicked off a far tougher spell, despite an immediate response in cup action. The Dons had beaten Dundee 3-0 in the second round, which is exactly how they ended up drawing Kilmarnock.
In the league, the Glasgow duo hit them hard, with a 1-0 defeat to Rangers followed by a 3-0 loss to Celtic. Three straight defeats, two goals scored in four games: the attack has gone missing.
Robinson reacted to the collapse against Celtic by making four changes at half-time, with his side already 3-0 down. The second half was much better, which may tempt him to start all four of those players on Saturday.
The injury list leaves the Northern Irishman without Brad Lyons, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Kusini Yengi and Kristers Tobers.
Even so, the likely line-up still has a clear spine, with Olusanya and Nisbet leading the line. The pressure is on that pair to deliver, in a game Aberdeen simply cannot afford to fluff before the cup trip.

Kilmarnock are the only Scottish Premiership club yet to get off the mark after four rounds.
The defence explains most of it: 14 goals conceded, worse than anyone else in the division. There has been no real spike in improvement, just a steady drift downward.
Last week’s 1-0 defeat to St Mirren did at least show a bit more life in the performance. Neil McCann could even name the same starting XI again.
The Scottish League Cup tells a very different story, with three wins and two draws in five games to reach the third round. That group format gave Killie some footing the league has refused to provide.
That is also the competition that will bring the two sides together again next week at Rugby Park. So Saturday doubles as a dress rehearsal, with a psychological edge up for grabs.
The only confirmed absentee is Robbie Deas, ruled out until the end of the month with a foot problem. Beyond that, the squad is close to full strength, which leaves few excuses.
The Pittodrie record remains the biggest problem: five trips, five defeats. Scraping their first point of the season there would take a serious leap against the odds.
