12 games, 12 defeats. 42 goals conceded, just 2 scored. Schalke’s recent record against Bayern reads like a disaster report.
On Saturday at 18:30, the Veltins-Arena is set to host its worst nightmare. Schalke are carrying a huge burden as they prepare to face the Bavarian steamroller. Short of a miracle, this could get ugly fast.
That number tells the story better than any pre-match speech ever could. It also explains why nobody in Gelsenkirchen dares say the word upset out loud.
Schalke came back up this summer after winning the 2.Bundesliga title in 2025-2026. It took the Ruhr club three seasons to get back to the German top flight.
Saturday also marks their first home league game since 2023. All 62 271 seats at the Veltins-Arena will be filled, and the noise should match the buildup.
Across the pitch, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern have rattled off three straight wins in all competitions and are already top of the table. The champions have not dropped a point since the season restarted.
So the second round pits 17th against the leaders, a newly promoted side still waiting for its first point against a team that has won everything so far. It looks mismatched on paper, and nobody is pretending otherwise.
The Bavarians have scored 11 goals in their last three matches. Schalke, meanwhile, are still chasing their first point of the season.
There is, though, one detail worth pausing on before writing them off entirely. Schalke were not as poor as the scoreline suggested on opening day, and the numbers from Augsburg tell a different story.

Schalke started their season with a 3-0 defeat away to Augsburg. Zero points on the board and a provisional 17th place heading into the clash with Bayern.
The scoreline still looks harsh when you break down the game. Ron Schallenberg was sent off around the hour mark with the score still 1-0.
Down to 10 men for the final half-hour, Miron Muslic’s side collapsed twice more. At 11 against 11, it had a very different feel.
Loris Karius produced a superb display with 10 saves, the best total of any goalkeeper on the opening weekend. That sort of number says as much about a defence being overrun as it does about a keeper in top form.
Even so, Schalke generated 2.10 expected goals in Augsburg. A promoted side creating that many chances on day one is not doomed to spend every weekend under the cosh.
The real issue right now is in midfield. Schallenberg is suspended, Ayman Gulasi is injured and Kenan Karaman remains a doubt because of hip discomfort.
Soufiane El-Faouzi and Satoshi Tanaka are therefore expected to start in the middle, with Dejan Ljubicic and Robin Gosens out wide as Adrian Gantenbein is out with an ankle problem. Bryan Lasme is also sidelined with a calf issue, so Moussa Sylla will lead the line, supported by Junior Adamu and Adil Aouchiche.
The fixture list has done Schalke no favours. Hosting the champions for their long-awaited home return feels less like a celebration and more like a punishment.

Bayern Munich: four different scorers on opening day 
Bayern began their Bundesliga campaign with a 5-1 win over Stuttgart. Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Diaz all got on the scoresheet, with a Josha Vagnoman own goal adding to the damage.
Four different scorers in one match says more than any long-winded lecture about the champions’ attacking depth. Kompany does not need to load everything onto Harry Kane’s shoulders.
The Bavarians backed it up on Wednesday in the German Cup with a 4-1 win at Osnabruck. Saturday night now brings the chance of a fourth straight victory.
Before the league even restarted, they had already beaten Dortmund 2-1 away. Winning a Klassiker on the road says plenty about where this side is at.
Kompany has a squad that has not lost away from the Allianz Arena in domestic competition since the start of 2026. That matters when you’re heading into a boiling stadium.
11 goals in three games, none of them in cosy circumstances. This machine is already humming in early September.
There are still two doubts on the Bayern side. Serge Gnabry has returned to full training but is not yet at full sharpness, while Jamal Musiala remains a doubt after his neurological issue.
Michael Olise, Ismael Saibari and Luis Diaz are expected to operate behind Harry Kane, with Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic anchoring midfield. Manuel Neuer is set to start behind a back line of Upamecano and Kim.
