Ligue 1: Monaco send keeper Yann Lienard to Cercle Bruges on loan

Another keeper on the road to Bruges

Belgium shuts its transfer window on Thursday. Monaco got this one over the line with hours to spare: Yann Lienard, an academy product, joins Cercle Bruges on loan for the 2026-2027 season.

The club statement made the aim plain. Keep the player developing. There is no buy option, so Lienard remains a Monaco asset, just parked elsewhere for 12 months.

Cercle Bruges, the chosen stopgap

Monaco describe the Belgian side as their “sister club”. The two share the same ownership, which makes moving players between them far easier than brokering a normal loan with a third party.

Lienard is not walking into the unknown, either. He will join up with defender Valy Konate and striker Lucas Michal, both out on loan for the season.

Three players from the Rock’s academy in the same Belgian dressing room, in the same campaign. That is not a coincidence.

The keeper problem

Goalkeeper is still the hardest position to develop from within. There is no sharing out the minutes: one player gets the net, for all ninety. A young keeper stuck third on the team sheet does not improve. He waits.

Sending Lienard to Belgium is designed to fix that exact issue. The Jupiler Pro League offers a full fixture list, a shot at European football and, above all, competitive matches every weekend.

Monaco are trimming the squad as the window winds down, and most of that noise sits higher up the pecking order. This loan is the quiet end of the same job.
