Eintracht Frankfurt vs Augsburg: a two-goal lead blown on one side, a straight 3-0 on the other 
Eintracht Frankfurt were two goals up with under 15 minutes left in Berlin and still came away with only a point. Augsburg, meanwhile, brushed Schalke 04 aside 3-0 in front of their own fans.
The two sides meet on Sunday 6 September at 17:30 at Deutsche Bank Park in Bundesliga round two. It will be Frankfurt’s first home game in 113 days.
That 3-3 draw at Union Berlin sums up Frankfurt’s main problem: they can score for fun, but they still can’t see a job through. The same defensive issues held them to eighth last season.
The direct result is that Frankfurt are not in Europe this season, leaving them with a lighter schedule. That helps with freshness, but it can work against rhythm.
Augsburg arrive on the back of a hugely encouraging start. The Bavarians had already beaten Energie Cottbus 2-0 in the German Cup before taking care of Schalke.
Manuel Baum’s side finished ninth last season, their best placing for years, and were only four points off Europe. Staying up is no longer the only target.
The odds point to a fairly narrow gap, with 1.88 on a Frankfurt win and 3.50 on Augsburg. Recent history also warns against getting carried away, with three of the last six meetings ending level.
Deutsche Bank Park should therefore host a tighter game than the table suggests.
Eintracht Frankfurt: goals up front, mess at the back 
Frankfurt scored three goals in their Bundesliga opener and still only took one point. The Berlin script, with a two-goal lead gone in the final quarter-hour, will sting.
Ebnoutalib hit a hat-trick at Union Berlin, which is the big positive from the early weeks. The young forward is already looking like a serious option through the middle.
Before that, the Eagles smashed SC St Tönis 11-0 in the German Cup, a result with very little real-world value. The proper test comes on Sunday.
Burkardt remains the main man in attack after scoring 13 Bundesliga goals last season, and he is in the squad. Chaibi, who produced two goals and nine assists, adds another layer to a front line that already knows its way around.
Uzun, with eight goals and four assists last term, gives the coaching staff a third attacking route. Frankfurt’s attacking options are unquestionably stronger than Augsburg’s.
The injury list, though, is still a long one, with Ngankam, Japan international Doan, winger Knauff and Sweden’s Larsson all out. Defender Collins is also missing with a back problem.
In their last two home league games, Eintracht have only managed a draw. Deutsche Bank Park is not the fortress it once was.
Lilian Brassier, 26, was confirmed on Monday and strengthens a back line that badly needs it. The question is whether the Frenchman is thrown in straight away.

Augsburg: three goals and a clean sheet to start the season 
Augsburg made the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Schalke 04. The promoted side finished with 10 men, but the damage had already been done.
A week earlier, the Bavarians had beaten Energie Cottbus 2-0 in the first round of the German Cup. Two games, five goals scored, none conceded.
That start builds on a 2025-26 season that ended in ninth, the club’s best finish in years. They were only four points short of a European place.
Kade, who scored six last season, and Austria striker Gregoritsch both found the net against Schalke. Brazilian Ribeiro added the third.
Rieder, who scored six Bundesliga goals last term, is available and gives Manuel Baum another option in midfield. The collective is doing the heavy lifting, and that stands out most.
Claude-Maurice, who scored five and set up four, is missing, along with new signing Suso and midfielder Breithaupt. Former Brest man Steve Mounie remains out of the project.
The Bavarian club had already taken points off Eintracht in three of their last six meetings. This is the sort of fixture they tend to handle better than the standings suggest.
In their last three away league games, Augsburg have won twice. They travel well, and they are up against a Frankfurt defence that has already shipped three in one match.

The Bavarians are scoring, staying organised and arrive full of confidence after a thumping win over Schalke. The call is for Augsburg to stay unbeaten at Deutsche Bank Park.
