Cagliari vs Hellas Verona: a gap in class to prove 
One cup tie, one winner, and a trip to Roma waiting as the prize. The stakes could hardly be clearer. Cagliari host Hellas Verona on Thursday 3 September at 21:00 at Unipol Domus.
The two clubs have not been in the same division since the summer. Cagliari stayed up in Serie A last season, while Verona dropped to Serie B.
The Sardinians have made a steady enough start, with two results telling the story. Three points at Parma, then a 1-0 home defeat to Scudetto holders Inter Milan, who struck early and held on.
Verona’s return to the second tier has been bumpier than expected. They lost on opening day against Ascoli at the Bentegodi, then drew 1-1 away to Padova.
The first cup round had already exposed the difference in control between the sides. Cagliari edged past Arezzo thanks to a retaken penalty converted by Alessandro Deiola, while Verona needed a shootout to get rid of Virtus Entella.
The Scaligeri were 2-1 up with five minutes left, only to let it slip. Andrias Edmundsson then buried the decisive penalty in the shootout.
The most recent meeting between the clubs also matters. Cagliari won 4-0 at home last season in the relegation battle. This Thursday, the Rossoblu are chasing a place in the next round, something they have not managed at this stage for a long time. Their only Coppa Italia final dates all the way back to 1969.
Cagliari look to keep the momentum going 
Last season’s 14th-place finish was the club’s best Serie A result in nine years. Fabio Pisacane delivered it in his first campaign as head coach.
The win at Parma and the battle with Inter suggest the base is there. The reigning champions dominated the game, but never quite put it to bed, with the final margin only one goal.
The transfer market has also reshaped the squad in a few areas. Sebastiano Esposito has left for Sassuolo, while Southampton right-back Yukinari Sugawara and young Inter man Yanis Massolin are both expected in Cagliari.
Roberto Gagliardini, who arrived on a free from Verona in the summer 2026 window, faces his old club on Thursday. The move went the other way too, with Gabriele Zappa joining the Scaligeri on loan.
Pisacane still has a busy treatment room. Yael Trepy is continuing his recovery after a serious accident, Riyad Idrissi has been out for some time and Yerry Mina is carrying a calf problem.
The schedule points towards heavy rotation, with league action resuming almost immediately. Even so, Cagliari’s back-ups remain a cut above most Serie B sides.

Verona still searching for their footing in Serie B 
One loss and one draw from two Serie B matches. Verona’s restart has been anything but smooth for Marco Baroni. The former Lazio boss, who has played for and managed Verona before, was brought back to get the club straight back up to Serie A.
The opening-day defeat to Ascoli was a poor one to swallow, and the 1-1 draw at Padova has only got the points tally moving. The regional derby at least spared them a completely barren start.
Their cup scare against Virtus Entella raised another concern. Leading 2-1 and then conceding late at home, five minutes from time, is not the sort of thing a defence wants on its CV.
The squad has largely stayed together despite relegation. Rafik Belghali has gone to Torino, but the core has not blown apart, as so often happens after a drop.
Amin Sarr is the main attacking threat right now, with two goals in three matches. Samuele Mulattieri and Cape Verde striker Dailon Livramento are fighting for the other spot up top.
Baroni must do without injured defender Martin Frese, while Daniel Mosquera is still a doubt. Sunday’s league meeting with Arezzo also hangs over his team selection for Thursday.

Last season’s 4-0 home demolition of Verona sets the tone, and the division gap only strengthens the case. Cagliari pushed Inter all the way last weekend, while Verona lost to Ascoli in Serie B.
The Scaligeri have already shown their weak spot in the cup, letting a win slip in the dying minutes against Virtus Entella. Baroni also has to think about Sunday’s home game with Arezzo, so he is likely to rotate even more than Pisacane.
The most likely outcome is still a Sardinian win in 90 minutes. We are backing Cagliari to take it.
