“Boa sorte mlkinho”. Good luck, kid. That was the whole of Neymar’s Instagram post once Gabriel Jesus had been unveiled at Barcelona. Brief. Almost offhand. It also came from someone who knows exactly what that shirt does to a Brazilian forward.
The two go back years with the national team, same dressing room, same tournaments. Neymar spent four seasons in Blaugrana, won the Champions League in 2015, then left for PSG in 2017 for 222 million euros. Nobody has topped that fee since.

The No 9 shirt, and a knee that cost him a year
Jesus is 29 and signed through June 2029. He takes the No 9, which in Catalonia is less a squad number than a weight. He also arrives off the back of a season wrecked by a serious knee injury.
The numbers since his December return are grim reading. Thirteen Premier League appearances. Two starts. Two goals. Set that against 64 caps and 19 goals for Brazil and the gap is obvious.
Barca got here by elimination
He was not the first name on the list, or the second. The club pushed hard for Julian Alvarez, then looked at Harry Kane, Lautaro Martinez and Joao Pedro. Nothing landed. Jesus was registered in La Liga with roughly 15 minutes left in the window.
Which is what makes Neymar’s four words read the way they do. This is not applause for a player at his peak. It is a nudge toward someone with everything still to prove, at a club with no appetite for waiting. The “kid” turns 30 in April.
