Celtic vs Aberdeen: the champions are rolling, and the Dons are already under the gun
Celtic-Aberdeen: a walk in the park?
Three matches, nine points. Eight goals scored, two conceded. Celtic are steaming through the Scottish Premiership at the start of the season. Best attack, best defence, no arguments.
And Aberdeen? It is grim reading. They are stuck on three points after getting thumped by Dundee (2-0) and then the Rangers (1-0).
History says this fixture usually ends badly for Aberdeen. Celtic have won six in a row against the Dons, scoring 18 along the way. In other words, the trip to Parkhead on Wednesday looks a lot like a punishment detail.
One thing does muddy the picture a little. Celtic were dumped out in brutal fashion in the Champions League play-offs, losing 5-1 in the second leg to LASK Linz after winning 3-0 at home and leading 1-0 in Austria.
They responded in their next game with a 2-1 win over Falkirk. The question is whether that European collapse has left a mark.
The wider backdrop is a title race that has barely begun. Celtic are chasing a sixth straight Scottish Premiership crown, which makes every home game one they simply have to win.
Celtic: the best attack and the best defence in the league
Martin O’Neill has the best attacking record and the best defensive record in the Scottish Premiership after three rounds. Eight scored and two against tells its own story.
That solidity has shown up in the cup too, with a 4-0 win at Dundee United in the second round of the Scottish League Cup. The draw then handed the Bhoys a third-round tie with the Rangers.
The only real blot on the copybook this season has come in Europe. To lead 4-0 on aggregate against LASK Linz and still go out 5-4 over the two legs will rank among the most painful nights in the club’s recent history.
Camilo Duran has stepped up since then. The summer signing scored a key brace against Falkirk in Kasper Hogh’s absence.
The injury room is still busy: Alistair Johnston, Jota and Reo Hatate are out, while Callum McGregor and Hogh remain doubts. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain filled in in midfield alongside Mika Baur and looks set to keep his place.
Those absences have not stopped Celtic from putting together three straight league wins. The squad is deep enough to take this kind of hit in a midweek match.
Two goals conceded in three league games is the best defensive return in the division. No opponent has yet managed to rattle the Bhoys’ back line over a full 90 minutes.
September’s schedule is also shaping the manager’s thinking. The League Cup third-round clash with the Rangers is looming, and O’Neill will need to manage legs without letting this league game slip.
Try it for $0.99.
Aberdeen: one goal in the last two league games
Three points from three games is a poor return for a side that expected more. The last two outings have ended in defeats without a goal.
Stephen Robinson did at least get the season moving in the right direction. The 2-1 win over Hearts on opening day remains the high point so far.
The League Cup has offered a bit of relief, with a clean 3-0 win over Dundee in the second round. That stands in sharp contrast to the 2-0 league defeat to the same Dundee side only days earlier, which tells you plenty about Aberdeen’s inconsistency.
Kevin Nisbet is carrying the attack almost single-handedly. The centre-forward has nine goals in eight matches across all competitions since the restart.
Around him, the squad is missing four players. Bradley Lyons, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Kristers Tobers and Kusini Yengi are all unavailable.
So the timing could hardly be worse for Robinson. Trying to nick a result at Celtic Park with a weakened group and only one win in three league matches is a serious ask.
The Dons’ problem is simple: they cannot build any momentum. A benchmark win over Hearts, a convincing cup victory, and in between, two defeats without scoring a single goal.
The 0-1 home loss to the Rangers is a perfect example of that lack of threat. One penalty was enough to cost Aberdeen all three points, and they never really troubled the visiting keeper.
Probable Celtic lineup: Sinisalo ; Donovan, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Tierney ; Baur, Oxlade-Chamberlain ; Hassan, Nygren, Hyun-Jun ; Duran
Probable Aberdeen lineup: Muller ; Cadden, Mayo, Happe, Guinness-Walker ; Ronan, Afeez ; Ntelo, Armstrong, Olusanya ; Nisbet
Football prediction Celtic vs Aberdeen
Our pick: Celtic to win by at least two goals (handicap -1.5)
The gap in form is too obvious to ignore. Celtic have conceded just two goals in three league games, while Aberdeen have failed to score in their last two.
The six-match winning run against the Dons in the league has been built on comfortable scorelines, with 18 goals scored and four conceded. Aberdeen’s 12 defeats in their last 13 visits to Celtic Park point in the same direction.
Backing Celtic simply to win offers no value at this price. So the call is Celtic to win by at least two goals, powered by Duran and a defence that rarely gives anything away in front of their own fans.
Duran’s return to form strengthens that view even more. His brace against Falkirk showed that Hogh’s absence is no major problem for Celtic’s attacking rhythm.

First, a word on our free predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. It is an opinion, a snapshot of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it really is not. And yes, that means you can lose. It is bound to happen sooner or later.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Above all, do not touch money you need to live on. And whatever you do, do not chase losses; it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or an income stream. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your life, getting under your skin or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist service. That is what it is there for.
- At the end of the day, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast (financial losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes, a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly become outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
