Galicia in a hurry
Thirteen years at one club. That is what Jose Maria Gimenez may be about to walk away from, and Deportivo La Coruna are the reason.
The newly promoted Galician side are chasing the Uruguay centre-back, according to Matteo Moretto, with the story relayed by Foot Mercato. Gimenez is said to have made Deportivo his first choice and the club’s officials spent Tuesday trying to close it.
He is 31. The Atletico Madrid chapter looks finished.

Simeone’s defender, and the years that piled up
Gimenez has known nothing else in Europe. He arrived from Danubio in 2013, grew up under Diego Simeone and turned into a fixture of that back line, with two LaLiga titles to show for it.
Then the injuries started arriving faster than the clean sheets. His minutes have shrunk over several seasons while Atletico rebuilt around younger defenders.
He wants a fresh start. Deportivo can hand him a starting shirt instead of a bench seat.
Riazor has been waiting a long time for a name like this
Spanish champions in 2000, Deportivo then fell through the divisions and kept falling. Promotion back to the top flight changed everything, and signing a Uruguay international of this standing would tell the rest of LaLiga that Coruna are not here to make up the numbers.
The clock is the problem. Nothing is signed.
