Nine balls over the Wrigley walls
The Chicago Cubs hammered the Milwaukee Brewers 17-3 on Monday night at Wrigley Field. Nine home runs on the night. No team in franchise history had ever done better in a single game.
Tyrone Taylor opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run shot, sent soaring into the left-field bleachers. Nico Hoerner followed straight away, clearing the same wall. Michael Busch added a double, and Carson Kelly drove him in with a single. Four runs in one inning.
Seiya Suzuki, Matt Shaw and Michael Conforto all went deep too. Conforto did it off the bench, a three-run blast in the eighth inning.

Bregman went deep three times
Alex Bregman hit three of the nine home runs. The first came in the second inning, after a Suzuki single, to make it 6-0. The second arrived in the fourth, back-to-back with Suzuki. The third came in the eighth, to finish the job at 17-3.
On the mound, Clay Holmes (6-6) threw five scoreless innings. He gave up five hits, struck out eight and walked two. His opposite number Kyle Harrison (10-4) blew up in brutal fashion: 10 hits and nine runs allowed in three and two-thirds innings, his worst outing of the season.
Cooper Pratt salvaged something for Milwaukee with a single, a two-run homer in the seventh and two RBIs. The Brewers had still come into Chicago having won four of their last five.
An August like no other
The franchise record was not the only number to come out of the night. The Cubs hit 62 home runs in August alone. No National League team had ever reached that total in a calendar month.
Three games left in the series at Wrigley Field. Chicago is chasing Milwaukee in the National League Central, and the schedule has handed them a direct shot with a month of the regular season still to play.
