From the Southampton academy to the French third tier
Eighteen years old, raised in the English system, and now heading for northern France. Valenciennes confirmed on Monday that Issa Tounkara has joined on loan from Southampton until the end of the season. The Mali defensive midfielder gives them cover in an area they needed to strengthen, with no buy option attached.
Try it for $0.99.
A player VAFC could never have bought
Southampton wanted him playing, and there was little chance of that happening on the south coast this season. So they looked abroad for somewhere the games would be guaranteed rather than promised.
Valenciennes finished 10th last term and are competing in Ligue 3 this season, the rebranded version of the old National Championship. A straight loan costs them wages and nothing more, usually split between the two clubs. At this level, that is basically the only lever a sporting director has.
The question nobody can answer yet
The French window shuts Monday night, and Valenciennes got their business done without waiting for the panic hour.
What happens next is the part that matters for a teenager sent abroad. Minutes, or a wasted year.
