Primera Division: Talleres pull the plug on Sampaoli after seven games

Seven matches and then he was gone

Jorge Sampaoli did not even last three months. Brought into the Club Atletico Talleres de Cordoba dugout last June, the Argentine coach was removed from his post on Monday after seven games in charge.

The record tells the story. One win, two draws, four defeats. Talleres sit 15th and bottom of their group.

Seven matches is hardly enough to judge a project. It is plenty when a club has sunk to the foot of the table.

The homecoming that lasted a summer

The reaction said plenty about the bitterness. “Sometimes things do not go as planned. It hurts me deeply because I have dreamed of coaching an Argentine football team for years,” Sampaoli said after his dismissal.

The detail matters. For all his long international career, the former Olympique de Marseille boss had never managed a club in Argentina. He had taken charge of the national team, yes, but never a side in the domestic league. He built his name elsewhere: Chile first, then Spain, Brazil and France.

Talleres was supposed to be the homecoming. It ended up as a brief summer fling.

Big noise, quick exits

Sampaoli has been a man of short spells for years now. Marseille lived it. Rennes did too.

His football, with a high line and relentless pressing, takes time and a squad built for it. Those two things rarely turn up together.

At 66, he is out of work again. The coaching market never closes.
