Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos: two seasons ending without finals football 
The Bulldogs sit on 28 points, while the eighth-placed Cowboys have 32, and there is only one round left. The maths has already done the talking: Canterbury are out.
Round 27, the final round of the Telstra Premiership, kicks off on Thursday, September 3 at 7:50pm local time at Accor Stadium in Sydney. Brisbane, down in 15th with 20 points, have been out of the race for even longer.
The Broncos come into this off a 46-20 home hammering by the Melbourne Storm last Thursday at Suncorp Stadium. The reigning champions are ending the year exactly as they have played most of it.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, lost 24-10 to the Penrith Panthers at CommBank Stadium. That defeat finally shut the door on Cameron Ciraldo’s side in the race for the top eight.
The first meeting between the clubs this season went Brisbane’s way, with the Broncos winning 32-12 at Suncorp Stadium on April 24. It remains one of the few real reference points in Brisbane’s season.
The table has little left to offer either side beyond the battle for places from ninth to 16th. So this is all about pride now, which usually makes things a bit messy.
One stat jumps out straight away: Brisbane have gone 5-6 away from home, but only 2-12 at Suncorp Stadium. That odd split changes the way this one looks.
Canterbury Bulldogs: an attack that never really got going 
The Bulldogs have scored 456 points in 23 games this season, which is fewer than 20 a match. That is the lowest attack among the top 12 sides in the table.
Defensively, they have held up reasonably well, conceding 502 points with a difference of just -46. That imbalance explains a season spent hovering around eighth without ever truly grabbing hold of it.
Accor Stadium remains a real support for them. The Bulldogs are 7-4 there, while their away record drops to just 4 wins from 12 trips.
Recent form is more worrying: two wins and three defeats across the last five rounds. The loss at Penrith, with only 10 points scored, only adds to that trend.
Stephen Crichton and the other attacking leaders have not been consistent enough when it mattered. A lack of options beyond the defensive shape has ended up costing them.
Ciraldo is likely to use this final outing to give the squad rotation some minutes. The official teams will not be confirmed until later in the week.
One point still matters: in Sydney, in front of their own crowd, the Bulldogs have generally played their best footy this season. That is their main case on Thursday.

Brisbane Broncos: a title defence that collapsed in a heap 
Brisbane have conceded 657 points in 23 games, more than 28 per match. Only the Dragons and Wests Tigers are worse across the competition.
The overall record says it all: 7 wins, 16 losses and a -220 points difference. The reigning champions will finish 15th.
The end-of-season form has not improved much, with just one win in the last five rounds. The 46-20 loss to Melbourne even saw the defence fall apart after half-time.
One thing does run against the rest of the data, though. The Broncos have won 5 of their 11 away games, while they have managed only 2 wins in 12 at Suncorp Stadium.
That split is partly down to the pressure of playing at home with a side that has been spiralling. Away from Brisbane, they have at times looked more free, including in that 32-12 win over these same Bulldogs in April.
No line has been spared by injuries and changes to combinations through the year, which has killed any chance of continuity. The official Round 27 teams will not be out until early in the week.
The comparison with last season is brutal: champions in 2025, Brisbane are closing out 2026 in 15th with 20 points. The -220 points difference says enough.
The key for Brisbane will be whether they can hold up defensively for 60 minutes. In each of their last five games, they have folded after the hour mark.

Our prediction: Canterbury Bulldogs win with a -6.5 handicap
Brisbane are giving up 28.6 points per game this season and just shipped 46 against Melbourne. Canterbury, with 502 points conceded in 23 rounds, have the better defensive structure of the two and are at home at Accor Stadium, where their record stands at 7 wins and 4 defeats.
That defensive gap is the real driver behind this pick. The Bulldogs do not need an explosive attack to put daylight between themselves and a side that has been fading after the hour in each of its last five outings.
Brisbane’s decent away record and the lack of stakes are the two caveats. They are not enough to offset the defensive numbers: the Bulldogs win, and they do it by at least seven points.
