The deadline moved
Every NFL club has to be down to 53 players by 5 p.m. Central today. For years that deadline fell on the Tuesday after the final preseason weekend. It now lands on a Sunday, which removes the two days front offices used to spend arguing over the last few spots.
The arithmetic has not changed. Rosters can carry a full 90 players right up to the cutoff, so each team still has to release or trade roughly 37 of them. They simply do it with far less time between the last live evaluation and the decision.
Around 1,100 players will be released across the league inside a few hours this afternoon and evening. For most of them, the training camp that just ended was the whole of their professional career.

Monday is the part that decides things
Cutdown day only starts the process. Waiver claims are due at noon Central on Monday, and practice squads must be submitted to the league by 10 a.m. Pacific the same day. That order costs teams control. A player released at the deadline can be claimed by a rival club before his original team gets any chance to bring him back on a practice squad deal.
Waiver priority runs in reverse order of last season’s standings, so the weakest teams get first refusal on anyone cut. Rebuilding clubs hold a genuine advantage in the 24 hours after the deadline, and that is how a player released by a contender occasionally lands somewhere with a clearer route to the field. When several teams claim the same player, priority settles it.
Where the roster spots actually get decided
Practice squads carry 16 players and the eligibility rules have loosened. Teams can carry veterans with unlimited accrued seasons, so the squad is no longer purely developmental. Players can also be signed off a rival practice squad during the season, which is why clubs sometimes promote someone to the active roster purely to protect him. A well-built practice squad has competitive value rather than being an afterthought.
The names worth tracking are rarely the ones at the top of the list. Offensive line depth, the fifth and sixth receivers and the backup quarterback calls are the spots that bite teams in September, when injuries push them back onto the wire. A club carrying an unusual number of players at one position is telling you what it expects to need.
