First pitch, first homer
Lars Nootbaar launched the first pitch of the game over the fence. Arizona were ahead before San Francisco had even put a bat on a ball. The Diamondbacks rolled to a 10-6 win Friday night in San Francisco.
Corbin Carroll and Tim Tawa added homers in a five-run third inning. It was Carroll’s 19th of the season, Tawa’s ninth, and Nootbaar’s fifth, with the outfielder finishing with three hits.
The Giants scored in each of the first four innings. It still wasn’t enough. Arizona led 6-5 heading into the sixth and pulled away with three more runs, including an Ildemaro Vargas two-run single and a sacrifice fly from Carroll, his third RBI of the night.

Five innings, one hit: Arizona’s bullpen slams the door
Kohl Drake, called up from the minors earlier in the day, lasted just four innings. He gave up four hits, five runs, one walk and struck out four. After that, Arizona’s bullpen took over. Gerardo Carrillo, Jonathan Loaisiga, Brandyn Garcia, Dennis Santana and Juan Morillo combined for five innings of one-hit ball, allowing one unearned run. Carrillo (3-1) got the win after a scoreless fifth.
For San Francisco, Blade Tidwell (0-1) was tagged for six runs on seven hits over five innings.
The night also featured the ejection of manager Tony Vitello, who was tossed after arguing a Nolan Arenado grounder ruled fair down the third-base line. Two pitches later, Tawa smashed his three-run homer. It was Vitello’s second ejection in three days. Logan Webb, watching from the dugout, was also thrown out.
Half a game back, and the Padres just slipped
Arizona took advantage of the Padres’ loss earlier in the night to move within half a game of the National League’s third and final wild card spot. It was their third win in four games.
The season series has been all Arizona: nine wins in 11 meetings with the Giants. San Francisco, which had won three of the first four games in this seven-game home set, was outhit 12-5. Bryce Eldridge, with his 15th homer of the season, and Christian Koss, with his first, provided the only real resistance. Tawa, Arenado and James McCann had two hits each for Arizona.
