Bundesliga: Leipzig swoop for Chelsea outcast Marc Guiu

Six hundred and thirty minutes, and out

That was Marc Guiu’s entire Premier League season. Ten and a half hours of football across a whole campaign at Stamford Bridge, and now he is leaving.

According to Fabrizio Romano, RB Leipzig have a full agreement in place with Chelsea and with the player over a permanent move. The talks stayed quiet. Nothing leaked.

Chelsea have kept a sell-on clause. The Spanish striker is due in Germany to finish the paperwork, and the London club had been putting his price at somewhere around 30 million euros. His contract ran to June 2029.

Two years in London that never got going

There was a 26-day loan at Sunderland in there too. Twenty-six days. Two goals and two assists, total, in a Chelsea shirt.

Chelsea took him from Barcelona in the summer of 2024 for six million. On paper the logic held up: a young centre-forward out of La Masia, cheap, plenty of runway. Then the queue ahead of him kept growing and never thinned out. At 20, the Spain Under-21 international could not force his way into the rotation, and the club eventually stopped waiting.

Leipzig running the same play they always run

Under 23, obvious resale value, minutes on the pitch, sell at a profit. Leipzig have been doing this for a decade and Guiu slots straight into the model.

The timing works for both. Chelsea shave a bloated wage bill and bank close to their own valuation. Leipzig get a player who would have cost far more had he actually been playing.

How many Bundesliga minutes does he get, though? That was the exact problem Chelsea never solved.
