Two days after the sarcasm, the counter-punch
On Wednesday night, after OL were knocked out by Fenerbahce in the Champions League play-off, a reporter asked Paulo Fonseca about his late substitutions. The Portuguese came back with a flat, brutal line: “Maybe that’s why I’m a shit coach. That’s the explanation.”
By Friday, on the eve of Le Havre’s visit, he was back on the subject. He was not backing down either. “I said what some people may think, but it’s far from what I believe,” he began, before rolling out a prepared, data-heavy defence.

The 53-year-old worked his way through Lyon’s recent seasons. In 2023-2024, before he arrived, OL finished sixth on 53 points after 83 million euros of spending, at 1.58 points per match and a 52% win rate. The season he came in: sixth again, but 57 points, 1.8 points per match, 60% wins. Over a full campaign at that pace, he argues, the club would have finished third.
In 2025-2026, they finished fourth with 60 points, at 1.76 per match. The club spent 50 million and sold for 112. This season, 29 million has gone out. His verdict: “Excuse my arrogance, but I’m the best coach in the club’s recent history. The numbers say so.”
He pointed to a marker Lyon supporters know too well. The last time OL finished fourth before his arrival was 2020-2021. Between those two seasons sat four years without a podium and a club stuck in permanent financial rebuild.
The Champions League is the one column he skipped
The logic holds up on paper. It leaves out the one place where OL judge him. Quarter-finals then a round-of-16 exit in the Europa League across the past two seasons, plus another failed play-off on Wednesday. Lyon are back in the Europa League.
Fonseca says he owns the defeats and only gives weight to criticism he considers logical. Under contract until 2027, he insists his relationship with the club’s hierarchy is close. “When the time comes, we will speak publicly about this situation,” he said. In Lyon, nobody took that as a throwaway line.
