MLS: Inter Miami name Kily Gonzalez as their new head coach

A new name in the Florida dugout

Inter Miami have made their call. The club has appointed Cristian Alberto Gonzalez, known everywhere as Kily Gonzalez, as head coach of the first team. The announcement landed on Thursday night.

The 52-year-old Argentine will not start straight away. He still has work permits to sort out. Guillermo Hoyos stays in charge until then.

Hoyos bows out with a ban

Hoyos, 63, was the club’s sporting director before stepping into the dugout. He had replaced Javier Mascherano, who resigned on 14 April. His caretaker spell ends with a punishment: MLS has handed him a one-match ban and an undisclosed fine for repeated breaches of the league’s late-kickoff rule.

He serves it on Saturday, when Miami host CF Montreal. An assistant takes the bench for that one.

The Messi factor

Going for Kily Gonzalez is no random move. The former Argentina midfielder has a close relationship with Lionel Messi, the club captain. His coaching CV runs through Rosario Central, Union Santa Fe and Platense.

He inherits a team that is already rolling. Miami sit second in the Eastern Conference on 39 points, from 11 wins, four defeats and six draws. The end of the regular season is closing in, and the new coach has to work his ideas into a squad already up and running. The schedule will not hand him many sessions to do it.
