Tennis : Gilles Simon named FFT director

A new role for the former world No. 6

Gilles Simon is joining the French Tennis Federation. The body said on Wednesday that he has been appointed director of high performance, with a brief focused on “working close to the field and supporting players with major potential”.

A winner of 14 ATP titles before hanging up his racket at the end of 2022, the former top-10 player will move into the national technical setup. He “will be on hand with young French talents to pass on his experience and help them progress towards the highest professional level,” the FFT said.

Ljubicic moves into an international role

The job opens up after Ivan Ljubicic changes role. The former world No. 3, who had been in charge of elite tennis, becomes a “special adviser” to president Gilles Moretton.

The Croatian, formerly Roger Federer’s coach, will mainly handle international issues and relations with professional players as part of the Grand Slam Player Council. His duties will also continue to cover French high performance tennis.

The second Musketeer to join the FFT

Simon becomes the second member of the Gasquet-Monfils-Simon-Tsonga quartet to move into the federation, after Richard Gasquet, who arrived in 2025 in the FFT expert unit while also coaching young prospect Moise Kouame.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, like Simon retired in 2022, has since switched to tournament director for the Grand Prix Auvergne Rhone-Alpes, an ATP 250 whose first edition is set for October. Gael Monfils, the last of the group still active, will end his career at the close of the 2026 season. Simon, for his part, had already sampled top-level coaching as Daniil Medvedev’s assistant, a partnership that ended in February 2025.
