Football: LAFC sign Ecuador midfielder Sergio Vasquez

A five-year deal for a 22-year-old

LAFC have signed Sergio Vasquez from Orense SC on a permanent transfer, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The Ecuadorian midfielder, 22, is contracted through the 2029-30 season, with a club option running to 2030-31.

He takes an international roster slot and enters the squad as a U22 Initiative signing, the roster mechanism that lets MLS clubs add players aged 22 and under at a reduced budget charge.

The numbers point at one season

Vasquez made his professional debut with Orense in 2023 and leaves with 91 appearances there, 76 of them starts. Across the whole spell he scored five goals and set up seven.

The split is where it gets interesting. Four of those five goals and three of the seven assists arrived in 2026 alone, across 26 starts. A player who scored once in his first three seasons at the club has produced most of his career output in the current campaign. LAFC are buying the version of him that showed up this year.

Thorrington points to fit

“Sergio is a talented young midfielder whose intensity, versatility, and quality on the ball align well with how we want to play,” said John Thorrington, LAFC’s president of soccer operations. “He has built a strong foundation in Ecuador, and we believe our environment will allow him to continue developing while contributing to our pursuit of trophies.”

The length of the contract says much the same thing. Five guaranteed seasons for a player with 26 starts of real production behind him is a bet on the curve holding.
