Three match points saved, then nothing
Jenson Brooksby came close to turning it all around.
Trailing 6-4 and staring down the barrel in the 10th game of the second set, the American saved three match points. He forced the tiebreak. He even had a set point at 6-5 on Stefanos Tsitsipas’s serve.
And then, nothing. The Greek took the next three points. 6-4, 7-6 (6). Second round done and dusted at the Winston-Salem Open on Monday in North Carolina.
Seven aces. Thirty-seven points won out of 50 behind his first serve, a tidy 74%. Tsitsipas got it done with his serve.

A title in sight before New York
The former world No 3 is chasing a second trophy of the summer. He already lifted the ATP 250 in Gstaad in July. Like the other seeds in Winston-Salem, he got a first-round bye.
The only other second-round match was over even faster. Sixteenth seed Daniel Altmaier beat Argentine Francisco Comesana 6-1, 7-6 (6).
The rest of the day belonged mostly to the lucky losers. Four players pulled out before the start of this US Open warm-up event. Two of the lucky losers who made the main draw cashed in straight away: Indian Dhakshineswar Suresh against Marcos Giron (6-3, 7-5) and Frenchman Hugo Grenier against Russian Roman Safiullin (7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3).
The other first-round qualifiers
Martin Damm, Aleksandar Kovacevic, Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, Dutch qualifier Mees Rottgering, Italian Lorenzo Sonego and Australians James Duckworth, Cruz Hewitt and Adam Walton also made it through.
Winston-Salem is the final stretch. Win here and you roll into New York with momentum. Lose and you’ve got a week to sit with it.
