Fulham vs Chelsea: two rookie bosses to kick off the 2026-27 Premier League 
Craven Cottage hosts the first official match of the season, with two London clubs led by managers making their senior debuts. Xabi Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023-24, takes charge of Chelsea for his first Premier League game. Across the river, Alvaro Arbeloa starts his Fulham reign with just 28 senior matches on his coaching record.
This opening-day fixture was pushed back because plenty of players from both clubs were away at the 2026 World Cup. It lands on Monday 24 August at Craven Cottage, with kick-off at 21:00 local time.
The spending gap between the clubs tells its own story. Chelsea have splashed out 333 million pounds this summer, including 117 million on Morgan Rogers alone, a British-record fee. Fulham have gone the other way, leaning on youth and tapping into their new manager’s Madrid connections.
The last 10 meetings heavily favour the Blues: six Chelsea wins, three for Fulham and one draw. The most recent clash, though, went the way of the Cottagers, who won 2-1 at home. Craven Cottage has never been the easiest place for London rivals to come and get comfortable.
There are plenty of unknowns here: two official debuts, two systems not yet fully bedded in, and a derby where there is more on the line than just three points.

Five years after Marco Silva arrived, Fulham have a new look. The Portuguese coach left Craven Cottage at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, having left the club settled in 11th place in the Premier League with 52 points.
Alvaro Arbeloa takes over with a profile you do not often see in the Premier League. The former Real Madrid defender has managed only 28 senior matches. Still, he moved quickly to raid Madrid this summer: Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios, both products of La Fabrica, have arrived to give the attack some structure. Shea Charles and Jonah Kusi-Asare are the other major additions.
The exits hurt. Raul Jimenez, the long-time focal point up top, and Tom Cairney, the midfield brain, are no longer in black and white. Harry Wilson has gone to Leeds, leaving Arbeloa without a dependable wide creator.
The Spaniard has talked up possession and direct play. Whether the patterns will already be clear in this first official outing against Chelsea is another matter.
Fulham do have one obvious edge: home advantage. The Cottagers have traditionally fared better at home against the bigger London sides, and Craven Cottage offers the sort of setting where an upset can take shape.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season with 52 points. The club decided the old project was not cutting it and handed the rebuild to Xabi Alonso, who was brought in on a four-year deal.
The money put behind him is unlike anything the club has seen in recent years: 333 million pounds spent this summer. Morgan Rogers arrives from Aston Villa for 117 million, a record fee for a British player. Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Valentin Barco and Geovany Quenda have also joined.
The injury list and absentees do Chelsea no favours for this opener. Caleb Wiley, Jordan Henderson, Aaron Anselmino, Mamadou Sarr, Emanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda are all out. Wesley Fofana is suspended. Seven players unavailable before a ball has even been kicked in the new season.
Alonso is expected to stick with a 3-4-2-1, the shape he trusted at Leverkusen. Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo should form the double pivot. Pedro Neto and Marco Palestra are likely to work the flanks. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are expected to play behind Joao Pedro.
The big issue is chemistry. A squad this changed, under a new manager with ambitious ideas, is not likely to be slick from day one. Individual quality covers a lot, but not everything.

Our pick: Chelsea to win
Chelsea come in with clear individual quality all over the pitch, even with the absentees. Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro give them a front line Fulham will rarely be able to match in this division.
Arbeloa arrives with some promising signings, but no proven Premier League collective. Last season’s Chelsea finished level with Fulham, but Alonso’s version has a much deeper squad.
We are backing Chelsea, while keeping one eye on the derby reality at Craven Cottage: it should be tight, the atmosphere will be heavy, and Fulham will have their moments. But the edge in the final third should tell in the end.
