Six minutes was all it took
Thirteen minutes in, Aleksandar Csongvai put Saint-Etienne ahead at Geoffroy-Guichard. Six minutes later Ballo made it two. Grenoble had not reached the quarter-hour mark and the visitors’ night was already finished.
It ended 4-0 on Matchday 3 of Ligue 2. Irvin Cardona killed off whatever hope was left with a third in stoppage time at the end of the first half, sending both sides in with the tie long settled.
Zuriko Davitashvili added the fourth in the 82nd minute. The Georgia winger has been Saint-Etienne’s most consistent attacking outlet since the drop, and he is scoring at the rate a promotion side needs from its best forward.

Nine points from nine, and a squad built for this
Three matches, three wins, nine points. Saint-Etienne sit top of Ligue 2. Montpellier are on seven, Rodez on six.
The margin at Geoffroy-Guichard said less about Grenoble’s failings than about the money and recruitment behind the home side. Saint-Etienne spent the summer assembling a squad meant to win this league at the first attempt, and Grenoble were never equipped to trade blows with it.
Clermont had already been swept aside earlier in the month. Whether the pace holds through a long winter is another question, and one nobody will answer in August.
