Premier League: Brentford tear Tottenham apart 3-0 on opening day

Twelve minutes was all Sangare needed to justify the fee

Brentford’s record signing had been on the pitch for barely a quarter of an hour when he slid the pass that opened Tottenham up. Keane Lewis-Potter finished it. The Gtech Community Stadium had its opening-day statement, and Spurs had a long afternoon ahead.

Vitaly Janelt doubled the lead on 33 minutes. Michael Kayode killed the thing off three minutes after the restart. Three-nil, and the contest was over before the hour.

Brentford paid a club record fee this summer for a midfielder who can break lines. The return arrived after 12 minutes.

Spurs are 20th, and the numbers are not kind

Zero points. No goals. Three conceded. Tottenham sit bottom after matchday one with the worst goal difference in the division, level with Coventry, who were taken apart by Arsenal on the same weekend.

The Spurs bench was raided early. Rodrigo Bentancur and Fernandes came on at the break for Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher, the latter already carrying a booking from the 34th minute. Dominic Solanke and James Maddison followed on 68 minutes, replacing Richarlison and Moore. Nothing shifted.

Nights like this are the whole Brentford business model

This is their sixth straight season in the top flight since promotion in 2021, and the bigger side still walks out of west London empty-handed more often than the table would suggest. Brentford guard home fixtures like property.

Michael Oliver took charge. Igor Thiago and Janelt both picked up cards in the second half, which tells you Brentford won the physical exchanges too once the third goal had gone in and the game became something to manage rather than chase.

They sit top with Arsenal, level on points and goal difference. It is a 38-game season.
