Ten days left, and the two sides are talking through Instagram
“Never ask a liar why he lied. To explain it, he will have to lie again.”
That was Fernando Hidalgo on Instagram this morning. The agent of Julian Alvarez did not name Miguel Gil Marin, but nobody in Madrid needed the caption spelled out. Atletico’s president had just shut the door on any exit for the Argentina striker, and took a swing at the people around him on the way out.
“You need to understand that Julian has not been surrounded by the best advisers over the past few months when it comes to his professional career,” Gil Marin said, per Foot Mercato.
Ten days of the window remain. The relationship between player and club looks closer to litigation than negotiation.

Barca or nothing, and Atletico know it
Alvarez, 26, has not moved an inch. He wants Barcelona. The Catalans need a No. 9 after losing Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, and the former Manchester City forward sits top of their list, again per Foot Mercato.
Money is not the obstacle here. Atletico simply will not arm a title rival. No fee changes that calculation, which is why Catalonia has not been discussed seriously at any point this summer.
Alvarez arrived from Manchester City in 2024 for a club-record fee. Two years on, parts of the Metropolitano boo him.
Arsenal bid, Atletico said yes, Alvarez said no
An exit does exist. It runs through north London. Arsenal have followed the Argentina international all summer and lodged an offer Atletico were happy to accept, Foot Mercato reports. Selling abroad neatly sidesteps the rival problem.
Alvarez is not interested. So everything sits frozen: a club refusing one destination, a buyer the club approved and the player rejected, and a deadline that stops waiting for anyone. Either Atletico keep a forward who does not want to be there, or they blink.
