62 then 64
Some weeks, a tournament turns into a two-horse race. This one is not one of them.
Miyu Yamashita shot a 64, six under par, overnight at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton. After opening with a 62 in round one, the Japanese star heads into the CPKC Women’s Open weekend at 14 under overall, a 126 total. Five shots clear.
Her day did not start smoothly. A birdie, then a bogey. But six birdies between the 4th and the 12th settled things quickly enough. “Rather than focusing on the score, I am thinking about how to make birdies. I will try to keep a good rhythm for the final round,” she said.

A run that has lasted a year
Yamashita is 25. She is chasing a fourth LPGA title in less than 13 months.
The run started at the 2025 AIG Women’s Open, which she won as a rookie. Two more victories followed, including the Meijer LPGA Classic last June. Very few players have put together that kind of streak on tour in recent seasons.
Behind her, three players sit at 9 under. South Korea’s Soo Bin Joo posted the low round of the day with a bogey-free 63, finding 15 of 18 greens and taking just 26 putts. Yuri Yoshida, with a 66, and Kiara Romero, with a 67, make up the chasing pack.
A rookie and a breeze building
Romero is the story of the week. A college standout who spent years as an amateur, she is playing in her first event as a professional. She opened with a 64 on Thursday, then added five birdies and two bogeys.
“Right now I am just trying to have fun. It is my first event as a pro, and the jump from college golf can be tough, so I am trying to put as little pressure on myself as possible,” she said.
The weekend may not be nearly as kind with the birdies. “The sun is coming out, the wind is picking up this afternoon, so I think it is going to get firmer and faster,” Joo warned. Ruoning Yin, with a 67, and Nasa Hataoka, with a 69, are next at 8 under. Best of the Canadians is Anna Huang on 7 under, while defending champion Brooke Henderson sits at 5 under after a 68.
