Parma vs Cagliari: two points between them last season, two weakened squads this summer 
Parma scored 28 goals in Serie A last season. That is the attacking backdrop for this clash at the Stadio Ennio Tardini on Saturday at 20:45.
Thirteenth in May, the Emilia club secured survival several rounds before the finish thanks to a four-match unbeaten run in spring. Cagliari ended up 14th, just two points behind.
Both sides booked their place in the next round of the Coppa Italia last week, Parma against Catania and Cagliari against Arezzo. The league now demands a different kind of arithmetic.
Carlos Cuesta and Fabio Pisacane were both in their first full season as head coach in 2025-2026, and both came through it. Pisacane has since been tied down until 2028 after delivering Cagliari’s best top-flight finish in nine years.
Summer has hit Parma harder than their visitors. Mateo Pellegrino, Zion Suzuki and Alessandro Circati, the core of the spine, have all left Emilia.
Across the last four Serie A meetings, Cagliari have won three, with the only exception being the 1-1 draw in February. That matters when you are trying to read a match between two survival hopefuls.
The Tardini hosts two teams who finished side by side in the table and both lost key attacking players over the summer. This one is as much about who is missing as who is in form.

Cuesta, who worked in Mikel Arteta’s staff, built a side that was hard to beat in his first season in charge. Parma’s third straight Serie A survival was based heavily on that steel.
But the summer departures have weakened the whole set-up. Pellegrino, who has joined Fiorentina, scored nine of the club’s 28 league goals.
Zion Suzuki has also moved to Aston Villa after a drawn-out summer saga, leaving Edoardo Corvi as the No 1 keeper. Alessandro Circati, a key part of the centre-back pairing, has gone to Benfica.
Pre-season has not been reassuring: after a triangular tournament with Sassuolo and Trento, the Gialloblu drew 1-1 with Arezzo and Iraklis Thessaloniki, then lost at home to Sampdoria.
The Coppa Italia win over Catania at least brought a brighter note, with young striker Simone Lontani scoring twice on debut. El Bilal Toure, loaned in from Atalanta, is expected to replace Pellegrino through the middle.
In midfield, Benjamin Cremaschi and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia are injured, Nesta Elphege remains doubtful and Swiss full-back Sascha Britschgi is suspended. The team that lines up on Saturday will look very different from the one that stayed up in May.
Survival secured with games to spare in 2025-2026 remains this squad’s best reference point, but that was built with Pellegrino up front, Suzuki in goal and Circati at centre-half. None of the three will be on the pitch on Saturday night.

Cagliari: tidy prep, but the creative side needs rebuilding 
Pisacane delivered Cagliari’s best Serie A season in nine years in his first year as a professional head coach. His extension to 2028 shows just how much faith the Sardinian club has in him.
Pre-season has been far more orderly than Parma’s, with three wins and two draws before their Coppa Italia trip. The Rossoblu beat Arezzo 1-0 thanks to a penalty from captain Alessandro Deiola, converted at the second attempt after a retake.
The transfer market has still opened two holes in midfield. Marco Palestra, who was on loan last season, has gone to Chelsea, while central figure Gianluca Gaetano has joined Atalanta.
Harry Winks has been brought in to fill the gap and made his first competitive appearance against Arezzo, alongside fellow new arrival Daniel Maldini. The pair will be watched closely at the Tardini.
The injury list is shorter, but not clear: Riyad Idrissi will not be back from an ACL injury until October. French striker Yael Trepy, who was involved in an accident after the cup game and placed in an induced coma, has according to the club started his recovery.
The one concern on the road is obvious: Cagliari won only four away matches across last season. The Sardinians do at least carry a strong head-to-head record, with three wins from the last four league meetings with Parma.
That 14th-place finish in May, two places behind Parma, backs up Pisacane’s work over a full season. The real question is whether Winks and Maldini can replace Gaetano’s influence in build-up play straight away.
