Twenty-two wins for Paris, nine for Rennes, six draws: the historical record hardly leaves much room for debate. But it does not tell the story of the last 12 months.
The 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season begins for both clubs on Sunday 23 August at 20h45 at the Parc des Princes. Paris are at home, while Rennes arrive with a very fresh memory.
In February 2026, the Bretons turned the tables and beat the Parisians 3-1 at Roazhon Park, thanks to Musa Al-Taamari, Esteban Lepaul and Breel Embolo. Two months earlier, Paris had put five past the same opponent without reply in their own stadium.
Those two results sum up the wild swings in this fixture. Across the last five meetings, Paris have three wins to Rennes’ one, with 14 goals scored and five conceded.
The imbalance is striking: the 5-0 in December 2025 alone accounts for more than a third of Paris’ goals in that run. This is a fixture that throws up extremes far more often than it produces cagey affairs.
Four of those five games went over 2.5 goals, and both teams scored in three of them. The most consistent trend here is the attacking output, not the identity of the winner.
Bastien Dechepy has been appointed to referee the game, in a first round that will use nine officials. The champions open the season in the Sunday slot.
Luis Enrique and Franck Haise head into the restart having had very different summers. That imbalance in preparation is likely to shape the contest.
Paris Saint-Germain : six goals scored, five conceded in five matches 
Paris wrapped up their summer with two wins, one draw and two defeats from their last five outings. For a club of this size, that is a pretty ordinary return.
Across that sample, the Parisians scored six goals and conceded five. The numbers stand out more than the results themselves, because they point to a defence that still looks a little loose.
Their last competitive outing ended in a 1-0 defeat to Lens in the Trophee des Champions. That game was played in Lens’ stadium, a scheduling decision that drew plenty of criticism aimed at the LFP.
Luis Enrique did not try to soften the blow after that loss, even going as far as putting the Blood and Gold among the genuine title contenders. That says plenty about how he views the level of the league.
Earlier in the summer, Paris also lost 3-0 at Mallorca and drew 1-1 with Manchester United. The standard of opposition in pre-season at least puts the raw numbers into context, even if it does not hide the defensive wobble.
The strongest sign from the off-season remains the 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the European Super Cup. Paris showed they can grind out a tight game without running riot.
Luis Enrique reports no injuries and no suspensions in his squad ahead of this first round. The only uncertainty is Bradley Barcola’s future, with a move still possible before the transfer window closes.
The midfield trio of Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz remains the spine of the side. That is the area Paris will need to use to suffocate a Rennes team that needs tempo to matter.
Maghnes Akliouche, signed from Monaco this summer for around 50 million euros, gives them another option on the right. His versatility offers Luis Enrique a fallback if Barcola does leave.

Stade Rennais : 10 goals conceded in their last five matches 
Rennes arrive with one win, one draw and three defeats from their last five games. They have shipped 10 goals in that spell and scored eight.
Their most recent outing ended in a 2-1 defeat at Sunderland. Earlier in the summer, Brentford had beaten Franck Haise’s side 4-2.
Their only win in that period came at the end of July, a 2-1 success against Club Brugge. In other words, there has been no steady rhythm heading into the new league campaign.
Rennes’ last five matches have all gone over 2.5 goals, and both teams have scored every time. Their defence is far too easy to open up to imagine them surviving 90 minutes against this Paris attack.
Even so, the club chose continuity by extending Franck Haise’s contract to 2028 at the start of August, just six months after his arrival. The hierarchy backed their coach before the season had even started.
The squad is still moving around, too. Jordan James’ loan move to Wolverhampton was confirmed on 20 August, with a purchase option reportedly worth 12 million euros.
Goalkeeper Nicolas Lemaitre is out injured, while midfielder Mahdi Camara is suspended. Those are two absences in exactly the areas where Rennes will need to stand firm for as long as possible.
Esteban Lepaul remains the key attacking outlet, after scoring in the February win over Paris. The Rennes striker has also spoken publicly about his ambition to play in the Champions League, which means performances in games like this matter.
His link-up with Musa Al-Taamari is Rennes’ main threat on the break. Brice Samba, in the Rennes goal, will be the other man who decides how wide the final margin gets.

Our prediction: Over 2.5 goals in the match
Four of the last five Paris-Rennes meetings have produced at least three goals, and both teams have found the net in three of them. That kind of run is no fluke.
Stade Rennais have seen their last five matches clear that total, with 10 goals conceded over the period and a first-choice goalkeeper out. Against Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Rennes’ margin for error is basically zero.
Paris have not exactly locked things down at the back either, with five goals conceded in five matches and a 3-0 defeat at Mallorca. Both sides arrive with incomplete automatisms, which pushes the numbers upwards.
