Jansson gets it wrong, Lewandowski does not
Robin Jansson went to ground on the left side of his own box and caught none of the ball. He caught plenty of Robert Lewandowski. Referee Rosendo Mendoza pointed to the spot, and the Chicago Fire went back in front at Orlando overnight.
Lewandowski placed it low into the bottom left corner while Maxime Crepeau dived the other way. Third MLS goal for the Pole, first from the penalty spot, and a 2-1 win that keeps Chicago’s run going.
The Fire have now won six straight in all competitions and three in a row in the league. They sit third in the Eastern Conference on 35 points from 19 matches, two clear of New England and four behind Inter Miami, with a game in hand on both.

Dithejane keeps announcing himself
Chicago had led inside four minutes. Puso Dithejane arrived on the second phase of an attack and drilled a low finish from around 12 yards into the bottom right corner. It was the second MLS goal of the 22-year-old’s career, in only his second start, and his fourth in all competitions after scoring twice across two Leagues Cup starts earlier this month.
Then the weather arrived. A severe-weather delay of nearly two hours hit just before the interval, long enough to turn a rhythm match into a restart.
Orlando came out of it better. Antoine Griezmann, who joined the Lions in late July, swung in an in-swinging corner in the 52nd minute and David Brekalo headed past Chris Brady. That was Griezmann’s second MLS assist.
Orlando keep finding the same wall
The hosts had their moments after falling behind again. Griezmann shot wide in the 77th minute after a breakaway that began as a one-on-one, and Marco Pasalic found room at the edge of the box in the 88th only to fire straight at Brady.
Orlando drop to 6-11-3 and 21 points. They are 1-2-2 through five matches of a six-game home stretch across all competitions, which was supposed to be the run that rescued their season. Two of those games have come in the league, and both have gone badly.
