Ninth for Brentford, 17th for Tottenham: the gap in the 2025-26 table between these two London clubs stands at eight places. So the opening derby at the Gtech Community Stadium starts with a very real imbalance.
Brentford even went into the final day of the previous season with a shot at the first European qualification in their history. A draw at Liverpool ultimately sealed that ninth-place finish.

At the other end, Keith Andrews begins his second full season after a first year that earned him a contract extension through 2032. His overall record stands at 18 wins, 13 draws and 14 defeats in 45 matches, a 40% win rate.

Twenty-two Premier League goals last season for Igor Thiago, the second-best total in the division behind Erling Haaland. The 25-year-old Brazilian has become Andrews’ main man up front.
His threat comes from a mix of physical presence and sharp finishing in the box, making him dangerous on all kinds of attacks. Ivan Toney’s departure is now ancient history at the club.
Mikkel Damsgaard feeds the front man from central areas or by dropping off to the left, after creating 42 chances in the Premier League last season. The Dane also chipped in with four goals and four assists.
The shape remains a 4-2-3-1 with a double pivot, usually made up of Vitaly Janelt alongside Mathias Jensen or Yehor Yarmolyuk. The latter, 22, posted a 94% pass completion rate, the best in midfield.
Set pieces remain the club’s calling card, a direct legacy of Andrews’ past as a specialist in that area. Michael Kayode’s long throws regularly pile pressure on the opposition box.
The 22-year-old Italian full-back, whose move from Fiorentina has been made permanent, posted 1.76 tackles per 90 minutes and picked up eight yellow cards. His bite in duels shapes the middle block.
The team numbers back up that identity: 5.12 corners and 4.82 shots on target per match, while giving up 4.15 shots on target. Brentford create more than they concede, with a positive but narrow edge.

Tottenham: a rebuilt XI learning on the job 
Two straight 17th-place finishes mark Tottenham’s rebuild. Last season brought instability in the dugout, a pile-up of injuries and a failure to turn their European run into domestic consistency.
The club’s answer came in the shape of a summer 2026 transfer window with very few recent equals, with more than ?237 million spent gross. This was a structural bet, not a quick fix.
Sandro Tonali is the centrepiece of the project, signed from Newcastle for a reported ?100 million. The Italy midfielder has become one of the most expensive players in English football history.
Mateus Fernandes joins him in midfield after arriving from West Ham for ?85 million ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United. De Zerbi is expected to pair the two in a double pivot in a 4-2-3-1.
The defence has also been reshaped, with Jan Paul van Hecke arriving from Brighton for ?52 million and reuniting with the coach he worked under on the south coast. Marcos Senesi has come in on a free from Bournemouth.
Martin Dubravka and Andrew Robertson complete the squad on free transfers, with a clear push for Premier League experience. That was badly lacking in last season’s group.
The danger lies exactly in that pile-up of new faces for the first competitive game. An untested double pivot, a rebuilt back line and a coach making his first league opener with the club leave plenty of questions hanging.

Brentford field a side that already knows itself, with Thiago and his 22 goals leading the line, Damsgaard and his 42 chances created behind him, and a system unchanged for a year. Tottenham, by contrast, are still getting used to a Tonali-Fernandes double pivot assembled this summer and a reshuffled centre-back pairing.
The Gtech Community Stadium adds a real-world test for players who have never played together in this setting: Kayode’s long throws and De Zerbi’s work with Tottenham on set pieces run into a unit Brentford have refined for years. The models, in fact, separate the two teams by only five percentage points.
