La Liga: Real Sociedad want Chelsea’s Mamadou Sarr on loan

Seven games in seven months

Seven appearances. That is the whole of Mamadou Sarr’s Chelsea career since he arrived from Strasbourg in January, and it is nowhere near enough for a 20-year-old centre-back who needs games far more than he needs a London postcode.

Foot Mercato report the Senegal international will almost certainly move on before the window shuts. A loan is the favoured route, because it lets Chelsea keep hold of a player they paid for barely seven months ago.

San Sebastian or Riyadh

Real Sociedad want him on exactly those terms. The Basque club can offer what Stamford Bridge cannot, which is minutes, and in a league where defenders are made to earn them week after week.

Al-Hilal have gone in from another direction. The Saudi club have reportedly spoken to Sarr already and set out their plan for him in the rotation. He would find Kalidou Koulibaly waiting, and the compatriot argument is one Gulf clubs reach for constantly when chasing African talent.

A decision that shapes the next five years

Sarr has eight caps for Senegal at 20. His route through Strasbourg into Chelsea is textbook BlueCo, young players shuffled between clubs inside the group, and it worked right up until the minutes stopped.

The two options point in opposite directions. La Liga keeps him visible, in front of European scouts, still on the ladder. Saudi Arabia pays better and hides him at precisely the age when being seen matters most.

Nothing is signed. Days left on the clock.
