Twenty-second is comfortable until it isn’t
Viktor Hovland walks into the BMW Championship sitting 22nd in the FedEx Cup standings. That is a decent enough number. It is not a safe one.

What changed is the math. When Hovland won this event in 2023 and went on to take the FedEx Cup, the starting-strokes system gave the leaders a cushion heading into the finale. That system is gone. Make the top 30 or go home.

The clubs that started it all came from St. Louis
There is a personal thread running through this week. Hovland grew up in Norway, but the first set of clubs he ever swung came out of the St. Louis area.
His father Harald was working nearby at the time, bought a set, and carried them home to his 11-year-old.
“I don’t know exactly where he lived or which course he drove past every day on the way to work,” Hovland said Tuesday. “But yeah, that’s where I was introduced to the game. He bought clubs, brought them back to Norway, and that’s how I started.”
He knows he is hard on himself. He is not stopping.
Few players on tour rebuild a swing as often as Hovland does. Asked whether the people around him think he is too tough on himself, he did not dodge it.
“Yeah, I’ve heard that a few times,” he said. “It’s meant well. I don’t put much stock in what I read on social media. But when it comes from people close to me, I really listen.”
Then he defended the habit. “If I hit a bad shot and get lucky by making birdie, I think: what happens next time if I don’t get lucky? I have to be hard on myself if I want to wake up the next day and fix those problems.”
His read on the golf course is a good deal shorter. “If you hit it long and straight, and your iron play is on point, you’ll go a long way in this event. Then it comes down to how many putts you can hole.”
