Two weeks left, and Emery is still shopping
Aston Villa have not finished. Transferfeed report that the Birmingham club have made checks on Christopher Nkunku, with the France attacking midfielder said to be on Unai Emery’s list for the closing stretch of the window.
What makes it plausible is Nkunku’s own position. AC Milan have been steering him toward the door, having reshaped their plans up front. A player being nudged out of an Italian club in mid-August is, almost by definition, a name that becomes gettable at the right number.

At 28 he still carries real value across Europe. The versatility comes first: behind the striker or off either flank, which turns one signing into cover for two or three jobs.
Then the traits English recruitment departments keep coming back to, pace, technique and a genuine feel for goal. The former Paris Saint-Germain man has done a Premier League tour already at Chelsea, which quietly kills the adaptation question that has sunk far too many August deals in this country.
Timing matters as well. With a fortnight to go, a player who already knows the speed of English football is usually a safer bet than talent imported from a slower league and asked to catch up on the run.

Context counts here. Villa won the Europa League last season and start this one carrying a different weight, the club expected to deliver rather than the one everybody enjoys watching punch upward.
Their window reflects it. Joao Gomes, Johan Manzambi, Modou Keba Cisse and Alejandro Garnacho have all landed in Birmingham this summer. Nkunku on that list would not read as a deadline flourish. It would read as a plan.
Whether Milan want to ease him out, and at what price, is the part nobody can answer yet. The two clubs have not spoken.
