Six homers in 14 games
Alec Burleson is in the best form of his career. The Cardinals first baseman has hit .340/.441/.780 over 50 at-bats in 14 games this month. Six homers, 19 RBIs, 13 runs.
Sunday was more of the same. Three hits in five trips against the Cubs, a homer, a double, four driven in, two scored. St. Louis won 11-4.
The homer was his 21st of the year, matching the career high he set in 2024.

He keeps passing his own numbers
Burleson is 27, and the personal bests are stacking up. Ninety RBIs and 31 doubles are both new marks. He needs 12 more hits to match the 147 he had in 2024. His 70 runs scored leave him one short of that same season.
His explanation is short. “I know what August can do to you. I know what September can do to you. I get what it looks like, and I think I’ve just taken the next step.”
His manager sees the same thing. “He’s a guy who knows what he has to do,” Oliver Marmol said. “Give him enough time and he’ll figure it out.”
Five games in Cincinnati, starting with a doubleheader
The team has turned too. St. Louis took a fourth straight series on Sunday and sit 9-4 across their last 13. Rewind to just after the All-Star break and they were losing 12 of 16.
Cincinnati is next. Five games, doubleheader Monday. Quinn Mathews starts the opener. The left-hander (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will make his second big-league appearance, after debuting August 1 against Toronto and giving up two runs on six hits over five innings. Andre Pallante (12-6, 3.46) has the nightcap.
The Reds arrive in bad shape. Beaten 7-1 by Miami on Sunday despite five scoreless from Nick Lodolo, they have lost six of nine. Rhett Lowder goes in game two. The 24-year-old right-hander is 4-18 with a 5.15 ERA this season, though he is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in three career starts against St. Louis.
