Ligue 1: Monaco go back in for Erik Lira with a second bid

A second bid worth around 5 million

AS Monaco are not letting the Erik Lira deal go. The Principality club are preparing a fresh offer to Cruz Azul for the Mexican midfielder, according to Azteca, relayed on Monday by Foot Mercato.

This second bid would be worth around 5 million euros. It would also include a sell-on clause for the Mexican club. Monaco’s first attempt was deemed too low by Cruz Azul.

The player wants it. Lira is keen on a move to Europe. That could tip the balance and speed things up.

A backup plan that is turning into the main one

This is hardly a new lead. Monaco were already looking at Lira several weeks ago. They had marked him out as a priority if Lamine Camara, the Senegalese midfielder wanted by Premier League clubs, moved on.

There is still one bureaucratic headache. Monaco must free up one or two non-EU spots before they can register the Mexican. Without that, the money alone will not get the job done.

Two weeks, three problems

The transfer window closes in two weeks. Monaco do not have much room to sort out a sale, free up a spot and bring someone in. The two clubs are edging closer on the fee, but nothing has been signed at this stage.

Neither side is talking publicly. No statement from Monaco, none from Cruz Azul. Until Camara’s situation is settled, Lira stays a name on a list.
