Mjallby vs Salzburg: a Swedish champion skirting danger against a serial qualifier 
Mjallby won both the Allsvenskan and the domestic cup last season. Fast forward to now, and they are hovering just above the relegation zone in their own league.
That gap between reputation and reality is the key to this tie. The first leg is on Thursday 20 August at 18:00 in Sweden.
The return is set for 27 August at 19:00 in Austria. The winner goes into the Europa League league phase; the loser drops into the Conference League.
The Swedish side arrive here after being knocked out of the Champions League qualifying path. Slovan Bratislava put them out in the third qualifying round, winning 4-1 on aggregate.
Salzburg, by contrast, came through the main Europa League route. The Austrian club beat Pafos in the third round, 4-3 on aggregate, after a chaotic night in Cyprus.
Salzburg’s European pedigree matters. Fourteen domestic titles between 2007 and 2023 turned the club into a regular name in continental qualifying.
Last season, though, brought a dip, with only third place in the Austrian Bundesliga. They are not quite the unstoppable force they once were.
So this is a meeting between two sides who are both short of peak form. The difference is squad depth and the kind of routine that comes from nights like this.
Mjallby: champions one year, sliding down the table the next 
Mjallby completed the league-and-cup double in Sweden last season. That run booked them a place in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
They got past the first hurdle without too much fuss. A 3-0 home win over Lincoln Red Imps, then a 0-0 draw in Gibraltar, sealed a 3-0 aggregate victory.
The third round was a different story entirely. Beaten 2-1 at home by Slovan Bratislava, they then lost 2-0 in Slovakia.
Losing the first leg at home at this level is the biggest red flag of their summer. They scored just one goal across the two legs.
The Swedish league runs on a calendar-year schedule, so Mjallby are right in the middle of their season. Their current place, close to the relegation zone, jars badly with last year’s title.
That domestic pressure is hardly ideal for confidence. A team fighting to stay up rarely walks into a European playoff in the best mental shape.
Across four qualifying matches, Mjallby have scored only four goals, three of them in the same game against Lincoln Red Imps. Against proper opposition, the attack has been close to non-existent.
They have scored just once in their last three European matches. The drying up in front of goal has come exactly as the level of opposition has gone up.
The schedule works against them too, with the Allsvenskan still rolling on. Mjallby are trying to survive at home while also handling a continental playoff. Not exactly perfect timing.

Salzburg: a comeback in Cyprus after going 0-2 down 
Salzburg entered the Europa League at the third qualifying round. The Austrian side drew Pafos, a team used to recent European nights.
The first leg in Salzburg ended in a narrow 1-0 win. Just a one-goal margin, which left the tie wide open.
The return in Cyprus went off the rails early. Two goals down, Salzburg fought back to rescue a 3-3 draw and complete a 4-3 aggregate win.
That turnaround came thanks to a hat-trick from Tabakovic, the only Salzburg scorer on the night. So the response gene is clearly there, even when things get messy.
The flip side is a back line that shipped three goals in one match. Salzburg have not offered much security at the back this summer.
Still, this is the Austrian benchmark of the last decade, with 14 league titles between 2007 and 2023. That habit of getting through European qualifiers is a real advantage over two legs.
Third place in the Austrian Bundesliga last season is a reminder, though, that they are no longer untouchable. Even so, they remain well above the level Mjallby have shown this summer.
Salzburg have scored four goals across their two qualifiers, three of them away from home. The attacking output is clearly better than their opponents’.
They also avoided defeat in this qualifying round, winning once and drawing once to get the job done.

Mjallby have lost their last two European games against Slovan Bratislava, including the first leg at home. Against the first serious opponent of their run, they produced just one goal in 180 minutes.
Their place in the Allsvenskan, sitting close to the relegation zone, underlines how far the buzz from last year’s title has faded. The domestic backdrop is doing them no favours at all.
Salzburg showed in Cyprus that they can dig themselves out of trouble away from home. Coming back from 0-2 down to finish 3-3 on a hostile pitch is no small feat at this level.
The Austrian side can win in Sweden and set themselves up to finish the job at home. Salzburg are the play for the first leg.
