MLS: Herrington’s $17m move to Hull sets a league record

18 years old, 18 matches, $17 million

Lucas Herrington has played 18 matches for the Colorado Rapids. That is over. The 18-year-old Australian defender leaves for Hull City in the Premier League for an initial $17 million, rising to $23 million with add-ons.

No MLS club has ever sold a defender for more. Colorado had picked him up on a pre-contract from Brisbane Roar in the A-League for under $1 million.

Do the math. That is the kind of deal a club stumbles into once a decade, if it is lucky.

Two points off the playoff line, and short a defender

The Rapids host Sporting Kansas City in Commerce City. Two straight home wins, 22 points, two points outside the playoff places in the West. Second of three at home.

Matt Wells knows where the danger sits. Without Herrington, his high press gets tested. “They have incredible threat in behind,” said the Colorado head coach. “You have to keep constant pressure on the ball. The second you stop doing that, they’ve got really quick players up top.”

On August 1, in the 1-0 win over Austin FC, Keegan Rosenberry made his 200th appearance for the Rapids. “In my time here, we’ve had ups and downs,” he said. “But this year, in terms of standards and demands, we’ve really moved the club forward.”

Four wins in 18 for Kansas City

Across the field the picture is darker. Fourteen points, one win in four since the restart, and a 2-0 home defeat to Houston on August 1.

Jake Davis, three assists this season, will not use the word collapse. “It’s that final step, that killer instinct in the match, whether offensively or defensively, and seeing it through,” the midfielder said. “We put ourselves in good positions to get results. We’re just missing that final step.”

A final step that has been missing since March.
