A crafty addition for the Maroons
Thirty-four years old. Free since June 30. Teji Savanier had plenty of time to weigh up his options. He made his call on Monday. Metz it is. The midfielder has signed a one-year deal, running to 2027, with the Ligue 2 club. That brings an end to the saga around one of the most technically gifted players in French football.

Seven seasons at Montpellier, then out the door
Montpellier was home. He arrived in July 2019 and went on to play 210 matches, scoring ten goals. His contract expired at the end of June and nobody moved to keep him. Instead, he has turned up with the Maroons. It is a drop into the second tier, but not a step backwards. Savanier knows this level inside out, with 221 games at this standard against 200 in Ligue 1. The left-footer has done the rounds too, from Arles-Avignon to Nimes, before becoming a mainstay in Herault.
Metz are chasing a return to the top flight
Luc Holtz knows exactly what he has brought in. A playmaker, a dead-ball specialist, a dressing-room leader. Metz want back up, and landing a player of this calibre in Ligue 2 sends a clear message. “FC Metz is particularly pleased to announce the arrival of Teji Savanier,” the club said on its official website. The real question is what happens on the pitch. At 34, the pedigree is there. The legs will have to prove it over a long season.
