Washington reshapes its front

The Washington Commanders reworked their offensive line on Saturday, signing center Daniel Brunskill, tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and guard Max Scharping. To clear room, the team released wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. and guard Timothy McKay and moved defensive tackle D.J. Davidson to the reserve/retired list.

Veteran depth up front

Brunskill brings the most recent game action. The 32-year-old played 16 games with five starts for the Miami Dolphins last season, his seventh in the league. He broke in with the San Francisco 49ers from 2019 to 2022 and spent two years with the Tennessee Titans before the move to Washington.

Petit-Frere adds youth and starting experience. The 26-year-old tackle sat out last season after the Titans waived him in April and the 49ers cut him in June, yet he started 28 of 34 games across his first three years in Tennessee. Scharping, 29, has logged 81 games and 33 starts over six seasons with Houston, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. A torn ACL kept him off the field last season.

What it means

The moves stock Washington’s interior and tackle spots with experienced bodies as training camp rolls on. Each signing carries a question, whether it is Petit-Frere’s year away from the game or Scharping’s return from a major knee injury, but the group hands the coaching staff fresh competition heading into the preseason.
