Atlanta United bets on Uruguayan youth
Atlanta United have their new signing. The MLS club confirmed on Friday the arrival of midfielder Mauricio Amaro. He joins from Defensor Sporting, who play in Uruguay’s top flight.
The move fits the club’s plan. Amaro is only 21 and has already been capped by Uruguay. It’s a long-term punt: his contract runs through 2028-29, with an option for a further season.
Try it for $0.99.
A signing built for the future
MLS keeps raiding South America. The North American league is pulling in more and more young talent from the continent, drawn by regular minutes and a global stage.
For Atlanta, the target is midfield, a position that never seems to settle down. The question now is how quickly Amaro adapts to the pace and the long-haul travel that come with MLS. The club, meanwhile, has locked in a young asset on a lengthy deal.
