MLB: Hunter Greene’s season hits a wall

A bad break at the worst possible time

A birthday. The 27th one. And a rotten present to go with it.

On Thursday, his 27th birthday, Hunter Greene learned he almost certainly won’t see a mound again this season. Terry Francona didn’t sugarcoat it. “There’s probably a slim chance” of seeing him back, the Cincinnati Reds manager said.

The right-hander went back on the injured list the day before with right elbow pain. The club is waiting on a second medical opinion before making a final call.

A season that never really got going

The worst part is the waste.

Greene didn’t make his debut until July 4. Before that, it was the injured list from late March after surgery to remove bone fragments from that same elbow. Five games. That’s all he’s thrown this year.

The numbers tell the story. Two wins, two losses, a bloated 6.83 ERA, 33 strikeouts in 27 and two-thirds innings. In his last outing, on July 31, he gave up four runs against the Pirates. The Reds still won 8-7.

A gifted arm, betrayed by his body

It’s easy to forget just how good Greene is. The No. 2 pick in the 2017 draft. An All-Star in 2024. Across his career, he has racked up 650 strikeouts in 96 starts since 2022, with a 3.82 ERA.

But his body keeps letting him down. In 2025 alone, a groin tear cost him almost three months. This time, it’s the elbow. Again. Cincinnati is left holding its breath while it waits for the doctors’ verdict.
