NFL: Jonathan Taylor extends with the Colts

A deal that locks in the future

Jonathan Taylor is staying in Indianapolis. The running back agreed to a two-year extension on Thursday, according to multiple US media reports. The deal is worth $44 million and can rise to $47 million.

ESPN has the finer details. The agreement adds on to the season already included in his current contract. It guarantees the player $39 million, a hefty number for a running back in today’s NFL.

Taylor didn’t hang around to make his choice. He reported to training camp ready to go, despite being in the final year of his deal. He had already told the franchise he wants to be “a Colt for life”.

A spot in Colts history

The 27-year-old has bigger targets in mind. He needs 1,628 rushing yards to move past Hall of Famer Edgerrin James and take top spot on the franchise’s all-time list. Drafted 41st overall in 2020 out of Wisconsin, Taylor has built his reputation on consistency.

The numbers speak for themselves. Thirty-two touchdowns and more than 3,000 rushing yards over the last two seasons. Three Pro Bowl selections. Indianapolis has its offensive engine locked in.

Indianapolis spends big this summer

Taylor is part of a wider push. Quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Alec Pierce have already landed major deals this offseason. Pierce has picked up four years and $114 million to become the main target after Michael Pittman Jr. was traded to Pittsburgh. Jones, initially kept on the franchise tag, then signed a two-year, $88 million contract. He is recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in his first season in Indiana.
