Ipswich land a Benfica-schooled anchor
Ipswich Town have signed Florentino Luis from Burnley on a five-year contract, paying a reported 16 million pounds that can rise to 19 million with add-ons. The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder only made his Burnley move permanent in June, arriving originally on loan from Benfica, so the Clarets turn a quick profit on a player they could not keep hold of.

Why the numbers make sense
Florentino played 33 games for Burnley last season under Scott Parker, holding midfield in a team that went down. Relegation flattens reputations, but a defensive midfielder who reads danger early tends to survive the drop with his value intact. Ipswich, promoted back to the Premier League and short of steel in the centre, saw a ready-made solution rather than a gamble on potential.
Benfica developed him as a pure number six, the kind who breaks up play and keeps the ball moving without fuss. That profile carries a premium in this market, part of the reason Hull City chased him before pulling out of the race.
A test of Ipswich’s plan
For a promoted side, spending this on one midfielder says plenty about where they think games are won. Florentino gives them a spine. Whether that keeps them up is the season’s question.
