Machado runs the show in Phoenix
Manny Machado owned Tuesday night in Phoenix. Three hits, four RBIs, and the San Diego Padres cruised past the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 in the second game of their four-game set.
San Diego jumped on it fast. Three runs in the first inning, three more in the second. Fernando Tatis Jr. lit the fuse with a double and came around on Machado’s knock. Randy Vasquez handled the rest, spinning six scoreless innings on just 80 pitches for his first win since June 13.

San Diego can’t stop winning
Nine wins in their last 11. That is the Padres right now. Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill piled on behind Machado, with Merrill chipping in three hits and two RBIs of his own. Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez had a night to forget: seven runs and 11 hits, both season worsts.
The Diamondbacks did get the last word. Nolan Arenado and James McCann each launched two-run homers in the seventh. McCann keeps rolling, eight straight games with an RBI, matching a franchise mark shared by Luis Gonzalez and Paul Goldschmidt.
Still plenty left in the series
San Diego wants to keep the good times going. Arizona, winners of five of six before this, needs a quick answer. This one is far from finished.
