San Diego jumps ahead early in Phoenix

Manny Machado collected three hits and drove in four runs on Tuesday night as the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 in the second game of their four-game series. Randy Vasquez held Arizona scoreless across six innings on just 80 pitches for his first win since June 13.

The Padres scored three in the first and three more in the second to build a 6-0 cushion. Fernando Tatis Jr. doubled to open the game and came home on Machado’s double, then Machado added a two-run single an inning later. Jackson Merrill piled on three hits and two RBIs.

Arizona’s late push falls short

Eduardo Rodriguez took the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, on a season-high 11 hits. Nolan Arenado and James McCann answered with two-run homers in the seventh, and McCann stretched his hitting streak to nine games while matching a franchise record with an RBI in eight straight.

The win was San Diego’s ninth in 11 games. Xander Bogaerts left after fouling a pitch off his foot in the seventh but stayed in to finish the at-bat before giving way to a pinch runner.
